Had to sleep on this post last night and let what I wanted to say, ruminate. Humility is not my strong suit. Nor is gratitude. I feel that my good fortune comes from good planning and deliberate execution of good plans, that I MADE. But that is only half the case. Because I must say that this film brought to light both humbling and grateful feelings. Humbling to think that, even though I had grand, powerful, life and death experiences, revelations, inspirations, epiphanies, worked damn hard to make my art, had carte blanche to explore and express myself without judgment...it was all just one tiny drop in a massive ocean of souls that have drifted through the American Hotel, who lived (and died) the same way, over a hundred and twelve year period. Grateful, after seeing the film, and so many of the faces of friends (family actually) telling our stories, and being taken back through our collective pasts and monumental moments of our lives, is something that is extremely rare. As is being a part of a community of souls, creatives, like these, people I will always consider family, for better or worse, for the rest of my life. I can never express my gratitude enough, for having such great luck. And even though I was a part of the community for a dozen years, a 1/4 of my life, starting my band out of Al's Bar, booking shows there, working as a doorman, working at Blooms General Store for four years, getting to know my contemporaries, and contributing to the scene as much as I could, my only regret is that I didn't do more. All I can say is that this great archive made by Pamela Wilson and Stephen Seemayer, has inspired me to continue to create, live, love and appreciate this city, this amazing group of individuals, and every second of our fleeting time here together. Thank you. Your tireless work to capture and piece together the chaos of our time together, so seamlessly and powerfully, is nothing short of awe-inspiring. <3 Keep an eye out for where to catch this movie. @colettemillerwings one of the many artists that have made their ‘mark’ downtown. The fun is finding the ‘wings’. Then of course a #photoop is in order! Thanks again @ramirofauve for a great evening! #screening of #documentary #history #caputered #special #Health + #Art = ❤️
Sure wish I'd gone to Al's Bar at least once in the nine years we coexisted in Los Angeles; that's just one of many takeaways from the sweet, funny & super watchable new documentary "Tales of the American" (the legendary punk bar was on the ground floor of the hotel, a rowdy #dtla outpost with 30+ minimalist living spaces for artists & musicians). What a place to have called home in the 70s, 80s &/or 90s ~ #alsbar #theamericanhotel #tipordie #pinnedbutterfly #wishidknowndonjones ?
