#MIFF2017 - Film 23: #IngridGoesWest. It goes completely off the rails in the third act, but the first hour or so of this is really great. Turns out O'Shea Jackson Jr isn't just good at playing his dad.
Sometimes I like to direct my actors in my natural state. ie. Before my glam squad arrives. #elizabetholsen #aubreyplaza Photo: @nate_nate
My #MIFF2017 Day 2 + 3 My Happy Family (2017) This Georgian drama is only the second film from duo Nana and Simon and is another poignant study of a society at odds with its self as a 52 year mother, wife and teacher seeks freedom from her repressive, overbearing household where she lives with her aging parents, her unappreciative husband and two children and the simple but happy existence she builds for herself. Like their film In Bloom, My Happy Family is an exhausting (this is a positive point) yet powerful drama that brings to mind the best of the Romanian New Wave. Ingrid Goes West (2017) it's Single White Single for the Instagram generation as lonely and unstable Ingrid stalks and befriends an InstaFamous hipster socialite in LA and soon becomes wrapped up in her world. A funny, dark and observant psychological drama and an ending that is as cringeworthy as it is hilariously on point. Insyriated (2017) this chamber piece is like a ticking time bomb as a Syrian family experiences the ongoing horrors of airstrikes and war outside their windows as a daily routine of survival. It's a real life horror story of those people at ground level who are trapped in their homes as a seemingly endless war wages on. It's heartbreaking and shattering and has a powerful performance from Hiam Abbass. Let the Sunshine In (2017) Juliette Binoche is at her absolute best in Claire Denis' biting, unconventional and unforgettable anti-romantic comedy of a middle aged artist and single mother seeking love and happiness in modern day Paris. Tonally different from Denis' last film the neo-noir Bastards this is no less subversive and starriest film she's ever made.
