LAF - VIFF 74 Movie Review: Mektoub, My Love: Canto Uno (2017) Director: Abdellatif Kechiche Writer: François Bégaudeau (novel) Producer: Riccardo Marchegiani Cinematography: Marco Graziaplena Synopsis: "Amin, a young screenwriter goes to his Mediterranean home town for a summer vacation where he falls in love with Jasmine, and meets a producer who agrees to finance his first film. But when the producers wife shows interest in Amin, leaving him to decide between her, Jasmine and his career.” IMDB. Mektoub, My Love is directed by Abdellatif Kechiche who directed 2013’s Blue Is the Warmest Colour - which won Palme d’Or (still a film I have yet to see, but will be soon). Never hearing of it, till the day before my VIFF session. Friends of mine saw it first, warned me of the prospect of the idea surrounding “male gaze” and the objectification of women throughout the film. Their is speculation and fact surrounding the possible perversions of the director and his shooting methods and his longevity surrounding takes. I didn’t let that spoil my viewing experience… at first. Throughout the film’s duration I was shocked at how much I was enjoying it. The beautiful long takes, the quick improvised back and forth between the charming and sexy characters surrounded by adult-european-vacation havoc. I cared for all of them, and their journeys. Seeming very Linklater. That is until the last 30 minutes. Which unfortunately is a very distinct change in flow towards the films balance of what I believe the whole films purpose was. The change in attitude from Amin was not properly conveyed where it needed to be most. The whole theatre's audience; same intervals throughout the film, (especially the males) made quite apparent noises and verbal slanders towards the director, obviously and annoyingly going too-far with scenes. *insert ASS shot* Apparently that is not the finished cut - so I hope that the Director takes notes on this original edit from audience reactions and makes the right choices. If he did, I can imagine that this would be seen as a masterpiece. But at the moment, I am judging what I saw - and it's just not complete 7/10 ✨ (was a 9.5 till the last 30')
