Ming dynasty Chinese calligrapher Tang Yin (1470-1524). Colophon to ‘Piled Greenery of Mountains and Rivers’. Tang Yin's inscription at the end of this handscroll takes the form of poetry attached after a painting attributed to Wang Shen (ca. 1048-1103) entitled "Piled Greenery of Mountains and Rivers." Dated and signed, 1522. Although attached, the two works are unrelated and can be appreciated independently of one another. The calligraphy comprises seven seven-character truncated verses by Tang Yin, the brushwork of every character refined and the varied thickness of the lines controlled, the brush force natural and powerful. The forms of each character are also exceptionally beautiful, leaning to the left and the line spacing arrangement both spacious and expansive. The words and ideas in the verse are reflected in the brushwork of the calligraphy; Tang Yin's poetry and calligraphy serving as a perfect foil for one other.
